Christopher J. Berry is Professor Emeritus of Political Theory and Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. Throughout his career he has written extensively on the Scottish Enlightenment. His major publications include The Idea of Luxury:  A Conceptual and Historical Investigation (CUP, 1994); Social Theory of the Scottish Enlightenment (EUP, 1997); and The Idea of Commercial Society in the Scottish Enlightenment (EUP, 2013).

In this collection of new and classic essays, brought together with a substantial new introduction, Berry revisits familiar themes of the Scottish Enlightenment such as sociability, the science of man, and the relation between commerce and morality.
