B

Dugald Stewart

(1753-1828)

In this episode of New Work in Intellectual History, Dr Lina Weber introduces the persona and work of Dugald Stewart (1753-1828). On the basis of her work on a new edition of Stewart’s Lectures of Political Economy, Lina outlines the British philosopher’s influence on the formation of political economy as a science and the relevance of his teaching for contemporary readers. By giving an insight into her work on the Dugald Stewart Project (2020-2024), Lina highlights the need for a new comprehensive edition of Dugald Stewart’s works and the challenges accompanying this task.

Dr Lina Weber is a research fellow at the Institute of Intellectual History at the University of St Andrews. Her research and teaching interests lie in the history of European economic and political thought, with a focus on the conceptualisation of state finance, the evolution of national identity and the formation of political economy as a science in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
